Ikea’s new art collection is perfect for more-is-more postmodernists

Ikea's Konstrunda collection exemplifies a strategic shift towards offering limited-edition art pieces that blend accessibility with high-end aesthetics, appealing to consumers seeking unique and expressive home decor. This approach not only enhances Ikea's brand identity as a curator of contemporary art but also positions the company as a facilitator of artistic expression in everyday life, thus reinforcing its commitment to making art available for all.

FastCompany: For it’s new limited-edition Konstrunda collection, Ikea commissioned seven contemporary artists whose work can provide a jolt of color, abstract patterns, and irregular form to any interior design that’s overly beige, boring, or neutral . The 22-piece collection is defined by works that are minimalist, geometric, and graphic. It’s available to shop now on the company’s U.S. website . [Photo: Ikea] The collection includes work by artist Lisa Reiser, who designed a lacquered black sculpture as well as a green one that looks like candy, and Emanuele Stamuli, who designed a black-and-white statement rug and matching vases.

Akanksha Deo, an in-house Ikea designer, constructed a stack of blocks that resembles a guardian angel figurine. Designers Ingrid Leander and Igor Holtermann created patterns for throw pillows inspired by caution banners and zebra crossings. Furniture designer Andu Masebo wrapped a tubular chrome frame around a square glass top to form a side table offered in both metallic and bright blue finishes. [Photo: Ikea] The collection is presented like a high-end art gallery, and the limited-run availability gives it a sense of scarcity that more mass-produced pieces couldn’t achieve. At the same time, this being Ikea, it’s accessibly priced.

“Art should be available for all to enjoy, not a luxury reserved for galleries,” Karin Gustavsson, creative leader for the Konstrunda collection, said in a statement. “Art evokes emotion, sparks conversation, and helps transform a house into a home.” [Photo: Ikea] The model of providing a curated collection of limited-edition work from artists and designers is becoming more commonplace. In 2022, Swedish design brand Hem launched Hem X , a partnership with creative collaborators to release art objects with limited runs of 100 pieces or fewer.

Ikea has its own history of limited collections, like with the late Virgil Abloh , homeware designer Gustaf Westman , and one that was all about surrealism . Gustavsson says Ikea has “extensive knowledge and experience in designing and developing products,” and through the collection, it provides “a platform for artists to create and an opportunity for people to collect art that is affordable and reflects who they are in the home.” [Photo: Ikea] In the past, Ikea has mined its archives to bring back fun, bright pieces to break up the beige of contemporary interior design.

With Konstrunda, it’s looking to contemporary artists and designers for those splashes of color and whimsy. For retailers, this model of limited-edition, curated collections designed by outside creators is an opportunity to elevate talent while highlighting the retailer’s own taste and eye for the avant-garde. Since collections like this aren’t released as widely, artists and designers can afford to be more experimental, and the retailer gets short-run products that feel more upscale and couture.
