As part of our series about “How Medical Practices Can Use Digital Transformation To Provide Better Care”, we had the pleasure of interviewing Board-certified physician and former Oracle Chief Health Officer Dr. Nasim Afsar, MD, MBA, author of Intelligent Health (Wiley, March 2026). Nasim Afsar, MD, MBA is a global health executive dedicated to advancing health and care for individuals and society.

As the former Chief Health Officer at Oracle, she led transformative initiatives to advance health and care leveraging AI and technology across the entire ecosystem of health and care. She has collaborated with healthcare delivery systems, payers, pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, retailers, and governments globally to drive impact at scale. Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path? I began my training as a physician nearly two decades ago, and from the get-go, I believed deeply in the science of medicine and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. I entered the profession with a sense of awe and purpose. I was convinced that if I worked hard and cared deeply enough, I could change lives. But as I continued through the early stages of my career, caring for patients at one of the country’s most renowned health systems, I began to notice something troubling.

Despite the brilliance and dedication of the clinicians, nurses and staff around me, it became impossible not to notice how the system itself often worked against the very outcomes we were trying to achieve. Patients’ information was scattered across disconnected systems. Care was often reactive rather than preventive. And too often, the person at the center of the system — the actual patient — became lost in the complexity. I realized that while caring for twenty patients a day at the bedside was deeply meaningful, if I wanted to truly improve health outcomes, I needed to influence the systems that affected millions of people.

That realization led me into leadership roles focused on quality, safety, operations, finance and eventually technology. My journey has been driven by a single goal: to help reimagine a system that doesn’t simply treat illness, but actively advances people’s health and enables them to thrive. Can you share the most interesting or most exciting story that has happened to you since you began at your company?
