While traditional leadership models have often been male-dominated, there is a growing recognition of the unique strengths and perspectives that women bring to these roles. This series aims to explore how women can become more effective leaders by authentically embracing their femininity and innate strengths, rather than conforming to traditional male leadership styles. As a part of this series, we had the pleasure to interview Nicole Mashburn. Nicole Mashburn is a senior living executive and CEO of Villa Marin, a resident-owned community focused on whole-person wellness and purposeful aging.

She brings more than 15 years of experience across operations, sales, and marketing within the senior living industry. Nicole has a proven track record of driving occupancy, improving operational performance, and enhancing the resident experience. She is recognized for her strategic leadership, operational expertise, and ability to align business objectives with the needs of residents and their families. Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series. Before we dive into our discussion about authentic, feminine leadership, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better.

Can you share with us the backstory about what brought you to your specific career path? I started off in sales and marketing in a sister industry before getting an opportunity to do the same in the senior housing industry. When I started that job, I very quickly noticed that the story of what was happening on the sales and marketing side didn’t necessarily align with what was actually happening operationally. I remember sitting in my office and thinking time and time again, I can do that better.

I can make a tangible change in this industry. That realization is what caused me to move into operations over 15 years ago, and that’s when I really fell in love with senior living. It sits at the intersection of humanity and purpose, and you get to do business inside of that. The thing with senior living is that you’re not just running a business. You are responsible for people’s lives and shaping one of the most important transitions they’ll ever make.

That responsibility, understanding it, selling it, and then making everything you promised come true really shaped how I do everything else. Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career? The first story that comes to mind is about a resident named Major Bill Lee. I remember walking into a community early on in my leadership journey to hold my first public meeting with about 250 residents.
