Mindsparkle: Behind the scenes Pupila DATE October 01, 2026 EDITOR Mindsparkle Mag A snail's trail in the sand shapes El Puente's beach restaurant identity Thirty years ago El Puente became the first restaurant in Avellanas, on Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast. It was founded by a family who found an almost-dead mangrove and spent decades bringing it back to life through conscious care and responsible tourism. That long, patient relationship with a single stretch of coastline is what the new identity had to carry.PUPILA found its starting point in something very small: the trail a snail leaves behind in the sand.
That single observation shaped the entire visual language, from the way the logotype moves to the looping, unhurried lines that run through the brand identity. Almost nothing in the system travels in a straight line. The palette comes directly from Avellanas’ sunsets, a sequence of warm oranges, dusty pinks and deep blues that the studio sampled rather than invented. Against those colours sits Ready, a display typeface by Plain Form with enough personality to behave like an illustration in its own right.
The combination gives the restaurant a voice that is loud in character but soft in texture.El Puente’s food was never meant to be exclusive, and the restaurant has always belonged to its community first. The brand had to reflect that same openness, so it was built to feel accessible and fluid rather than precious. Menus, signage and packaging all share the same loose, hand-led quality.Across the applications the snail trail reappears as a structural device, curling around plates, wrapping cups and threading through printed matter.
The typography is set generously and allowed to wander, echoing the quiet path of the animal that started the whole idea. Even the most functional pieces keep that sense of lightness.A short film closes the system out, tracing the mark as it draws itself across sand and water. It positions El Puente not as a polished hospitality brand but as something grown in place over three decades. The identity’s real achievement is making thirty years of slow, careful work look effortless. Unlock all insights with Plus Unlock everything with Mindsparkle Mag Plus.
