On 5 Things You Need To Know To Optimize Your Company’s Approach to Data Privacy -- Listen Share “The problem is how “good enough” is defined. It often becomes “we have not seen an attack exploiting this vulnerability yet.” Organizations do not advertise breaches, and successful attackers stay even quieter. So the absence of noise is not proof of safety.” “The problem is how “good enough” is defined. It often becomes “we have not seen an attack exploiting this vulnerability yet.” Organizations do not advertise breaches, and successful attackers stay even quieter.

So the absence of noise is not proof of safety.” As a part of this series, we had the pleasure to interview Thi Nguyen-Huu. Thi Nguyen-Huu, Founder and CEO of WinMagic Corp. since 1997, is a leading figure in data protection and encryption solutions. His commitment to high standards has propelled WinMagic to the forefront of the industry, delivering innovative and sophisticated solutions that are trusted globally by governments and enterprises. Under Thi’s leadership, WinMagic has cultivated a culture of continuous innovation and customer focus.

His visionary approach and dedication to high standards have raised the bar in disk encryption with notable advancements including PKCS#11 standards, key labeling, MFA, networking at pre-boot authentication and unattended deployment for multi-platforms. WinMagic’s expertise in securing the endpoint has proven pivotal in solving online access and security. Over the past two years, he advocated that online access can be completely secure without burdening the user — in fact, with no user action at all.

In the quest to resolve cybersecurity attacks, Thi has discovered shortcomings in the industry, including a fundamental flaw in protocols that are used trillions of times a day. A correct solution will not only eliminate all cyberattacks today but can do so without user action. Thi appeals to the industry to strengthen TLS, FIDO, federated authentication, and other standards, not only to eliminate current cyber threats but also to build a more secure future by advancing digital security practices. Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you.

Can you tell us a bit about how you grew up? I was born in Vietnam and studied Electrical Engineering in Germany. Once I touched software, I focused completely on it. After a few years working fulltime, I started a small company building embedded software for industrial machines. In 1989 I moved to Canada and continued working across several areas before founding WinMagic in 1997 to provide disk encryption for PCs. What attracted me was the power of cryptography — it is like magic. As WinMagic grew, I realized I wanted it to reflect the values I carried from earlier in life.

Growing up during difficult times teaches you to appreciate freedom, fairness, clarity, and the importance of helping when you can. I don’t think in terms of ambition or chasing something big. I care more about building things that work, fixing incorrect solutions and ideas, keeping high standards, and creating solutions that make a meaningful difference. That is what I want WinMagic to represent. Is there a particular story that inspired you to pursue a career in cybersecurity? We’d love to hear it. I like software, and cryptography. I’ve found that a good software engineer can produce software a hundred others cannot.
