High-performing leaders are expected to be “on” all the time, making decisions under pressure, carrying other people’s stress, and pushing through nonstop demands. For years, many have treated self-care like a luxury, something to get to after the next deadline or the next milestone.

But burnout, health breakdowns, strained relationships, and declining focus are catching up with even the most driven executives. What does real self-care look like when you are leading at a high level, and why has it become a requirement rather than a nice-to-have?

In this interview series, we are talking to founders, CEOs, executives, coaches, doctors, and anyone who is an authority about “Why Prioritizing Self-Care Is No Longer Optional for High-Performing Leaders”. As a part of this series, we had the pleasure of interviewing Yeharar Stephen. Yeharar Stephen is a licensed clinician and Senior Leadership Strategist with over 15 years of experience in executive leadership. As the founder of Stephen Counseling and Executive Coaching, her work focuses on scaling sustainability for both high-achieving individuals and the organizations they manage.

Having directed large-scale programs, Yeharar understands the intersection of executive pressure and the psychological weight of the workforce. In her work with leaders, she has experienced firsthand how the lack of self-care not only keeps the individual in a dysregulated state but also has negative effects that show up in the workplace. She integrates her leadership background with trauma-informed protocols to help high stakes individuals and systems remain steady amidst environmental and societal friction. Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we begin, can you please introduce yourself?

Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your ‘Origin Story’ and how you got started? I’m so glad to join you for this interview. My name is Yeharar Stephen and I’m a psychotherapist who works with high stakes individuals who battle high functioning anxiety and with people who suffer from burnout and overwhelm due to operating outside of a healthy functioning capacity. I spent over 10 years in executive leadership and had the opportunity to work with some amazing people throughout my career. Early on in my life I demonstrated some type of leadership qualities.

A funny story my mother likes to share is about a time when I was removed from nursery school after trying to take over the class of other 4-year-olds. One afternoon I just instructed my innocent and eager classmates to line up for recess — and they all did. Let’s just say, I didn’t go back to the class for some time. Throughout my life, whether in school or in my family and social groups, I was often chosen to lead, manage, and organize programs, crises, events, and activities. I think people could see the natural ability I had to jump right in and find solutions.
