Yoto designed the cutest way to get kids off screens
Yoto's innovative design approach with the Yoto Mini emphasizes a screen-free experience for children, fostering independence and curiosity through the use of physical cards. This strategy not only differentiates Yoto in a market saturated with digital distractions but also aligns with a growing demand for products that prioritize children's developmental needs over advertising-driven models.
FastCompany: As algorithms and endless feeds increasingly shape children’s technology, the Yoto Mini—the winner of the 2026 Innovation by Design award in Best Design Europe, Middle East, and Africa —is a portable audio player that gives children the freedom to explore stories and music without the distractions of a screen or AI -driven recommendations. The foundation of Yoto ’s design is the device’s use of physical cards. The player is priced around $80 and pairs with cards ranging from $5 to $15 each that give children access to a media library spanning storybook classics, licensed music, and stories from partners like Disney and Sesame Street.
Families can also make their own cards, loading personal recordings, favorite MP3s, or bedtime messages onto blank cards for truly custom listening. {"blockType":"mv-promo-block","data":{"imageDesktopUrl":"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/09\/2026-IBD_social-share-2-16x9-1.jpg","imageMobileUrl":"https:\/\/images.fastcompany.com\/image\/upload\/f_webp,q_auto,c_fit\/wp-cms-2\/2026\/09\/2026-IBD_social-share-1-1-1x1-1.jpg","eyebrow":"","headline":"Meet the world\u0027s most innovative design companies","dek":"","subhed":"","description":"","ctaText":"See the List","ctaUrl":"https:\/\/www.fastc

The Yoto Mini was introduced in 2021, and a recent redesign offers enhanced functionality—a new green button serves as a direct shortcut to a child’s favorite content stored on the device without needing a physical card. Other design updates include increased battery life and storage capacity, with a softer, more durable water-resistant form built for small hands. Underlying the product is a business model that doesn’t depend on advertising or data collection. “A Yoto player is a discernment machine,” says Tom Ballhatchet, VP of innovation and founding designer at Yoto.
“As screens get more embedded in our children’s lives, and more contested, the kids who do well will be the ones who’ve learned to choose deliberately and stay with something they’ve chosen. That feels like a good muscle to build early.”
Yoto's unique approach to promoting screen-free experiences for children addresses a significant market need and offers actionable insights for brand strategy professionals focused on child development and design innovation.
