High-performing leaders are expected to be “on” all the time, making decisions under pressure, carrying other people’s stress, and pushing through nonstop demands. For years, many have treated self-care like a luxury, something to get to after the next deadline or the next milestone. But burnout, health breakdowns, strained relationships, and declining focus are catching up with even the most driven executives. What does real self-care look like when you are leading at a high level, and why has it become a requirement rather than a nice-to-have?

Can you tell us a bit about your ‘Origin Story’ and how you got started? This topic isn’t theoretical for me — it’s lived experience. I’m Dana Earhart, a Business Growth Strategist and Leadership Mentor to 6-, 7-, and 8-figure service-based business founders and CEOs. I help leaders remove bottlenecks, build self-managing teams, and design businesses that grow without consuming their health, relationships, or focus. My path into this work wasn’t linear — it was earned. In my 20s, I was driven to succeed.

I climbed the corporate ladder quickly, earned multiple promotions, traveled extensively for client work, led a team of 100 and worked 50–60+ hour weeks. I was named Salesperson of the Year and was outpacing several VPs in the company. On paper, I was winning. Behind the scenes, I was running on empty. At 29, I landed in the ER with chest pain. At 38, my conference call was interrupted by an ambulance ride, followed by an angiogram. Thankfully, I was cleared both times. It wasn’t my heart. It was stress. Those moments forced me to rethink everything — not just how I worked, how I lived and led.
