When your mission is clear and you believe in the value of what you’re creating, the inconveniences of logistics and ego won’t overwhelm your drive. As part of our interview series called “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became A Founder,” I had the pleasure of interviewing Shauna Brittenham Reiter. Shauna Brittenham Reiter is an entrepreneur and author dedicated to the empowerment and healing of herself and others.

In 2018, she founded the multi-million dollar wellness company Alaya Naturals based on the principles of holistic health that led her from a life limited by overwhelming ailments to founding a successful wellness company before the age of forty. Shauna’s bestselling book, You Are the Boss of You, was written to empower others to feel emotionally free and live life on their own terms. Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path? It is often the hiccups in life that steer us in the direction of insight and opportunity.

After having two kids in twenty-four months, a dark cloud settled into my psyche. My attempt to be unflinchingly present for both of my children was unsustainable, and my energy plummeted. Having negotiated serious autoimmune issues my entire life, I knew I needed support, but couldn’t find a solution on the market. That’s how my wellness company Alaya Naturals was born — I created what I myself needed to survive. Hearing from thousands of customers about their own struggles with autoimmune issues inspired me to write the book You Are the Boss of You.

My book addresses ten major themes that have contributed to my healing emotionally and mentally and offers concrete tools to live an empowered, authentic life on your terms. Can you tell us a story about the hard times that you faced when you first started your journey? My daughter was one-year old when I started Alaya Naturals, and I could not have anticipated how many hats I would have to wear. I remember late nights in our office (read: former garage), where my husband and I designed the original labels for the company and brainstormed ideas for products.

Initially, I was our one and only customer service representative, so I created an alias by stringing together the names of my two closest friends. As a recovering perfectionist, I was forced to reframe the expectations I had for myself and to accept that I couldn’t give a hundred percent to everyone and everything at all times. As a mother, a founder, and a human, I had to work very intentionally to not conflate my identity with what I was able to offer/produce at any given moment in time. Where did you get the drive to continue even though things were so hard? Being a person is inherently challenging, as is creating anything meaningful.
